I'm looking at buying a Massey TO30. It has an 8 volt battery on it that is dead. Should it actually need a 6 volt battery?

The old 8 volt switcheroo game is usually done when the owner doesn't want to repair the 6 volt system and then the 6 volt generator has a hard time keeping the 8 volt battery charged even with the voltage regulator set up. Lights and gauges and 6 volt coils don't fare well too well with the extra voltage either.

If it has an 8 volt battery in it, I agree it was most likely originally 6 volt. I"m not any fan of the 8 volt systems, Id rather repair the exisitng system as needed with the use of a good heavy duty battery and 00 Gauge Cables, but if I was gonna convert, Id go ahead and make it the way more standard 12 volts.
