I am restoring a 1953 60 John Deere. I am working on getting the brakes apart. I have them off the tractor. The adjusting screw seems to be stuck in place and I can't get them apart. If anyone has any tips or suggestions about trying to get these brakes apart, please let me know.

you are going to have to back out the adjusting screws, otherwise the shoes will probably hang up on the drum. Start by soaking the adj bolt with penetrating oil and then whack the end of it with a good ballpeen hammer and then keep repeating the process. It should loosen up but if not you will have use heat. Use at least a 12 inch cresent wrench and if you have some way to couple up a impact wrench, use it. Vibration and impact helps a lot.

Your first one is aways tough, like serving an apprenticeship, after that they can be kind of fun to rebuild.
