I was bush hogging with my Ford 601 Workmaster and my steering wheel suddenly would not turn the front wheels. The sterring wheel turns, but somehow the link between the steering wheel and the front tires is perhaps broken? I do not have power steering on this tractor. When I put the tractor up on blocks, the steering wheel could then easily turn the front wheels.

could someone please point me in the right direction as to where to start to figure this out. I have a manual which shows me how to start at the steering wheel and dismantle the steering column. Is this what I need to do?

Anyones help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Susan

Probably the bearings in the steering box went. Thats a chronic weak spot on the Fords, IMHO. You have to pull the steering wheel, loosen the hood and remove the shield around the steering column. Then unbolt the top of the steering gear box. The whole unit will lift away and then you can get at the bearings. The bottom bearing race is a pain to remove. HAve to have the right puller or weld a bead around the inside and it'll shrink it enough to get out. There are steel bearings and plastic bearings. I've used both and the plastic seems to work as well as the steel. Biggest problema fter the bottom race is getting the thing set back up so you have equal steering in both directions. Jack the front of the traactor up before you button it up and make sure you can turn both directions, otherwise you go in a circle!

The main problem in the Saginaw steering gear box is lack of lub causing the upper bearing to fall apart. The lower bearing is a snap to get out, just drive the freeze type cup out from the top, the race seat has notches wich allow a punch to drive the seat out from the bottom. As far as alignment it's easy I have a cut away from a manual showing proper alignment. The same exact steering system is used on Oliver Super 55 and 550.

It sounds like the steering selector gears are stripped. You will have to take the steering box apart.
