Sorry if this is a double post I can’t seem to find my post so I am trying again. I tried to pull start my 1957 ford workmaster 601. Now the engine does not seam to be engaged to the wheels. The shifter feels as if it goes into gear but it behaves like it is in neutral. I removed the plate that the shifter is attached to and everything inside looks fairly normal to me. Can anyone guess what is the most likely damage to result from the described abuse? Please give pointers on where to start with a diagnostic plan. All advice welcome.

Thanks Dave

Well We have pull started it many times over the years if the battery was dead. Sometimes the battery is dead because it hasnt been used in awhile or because it was hard to start and we wore the battery down repeatedly trying to start it. Recently it had started shutting off while in use and not starting again until it was cooled off. I had wondered if it might be an electrical problem and considered replacing all the wires distributor etc, but never gotten around to it. I have also wanted to replace the gas tank or have it cleaned out and coated on the interior. I removed it once and tried to clean it out but the sediment glass continues to constantly get full of rust particles and the problems I am having could be related to clogged fuel lines or the carborator.

The last time that I tried to pull start it the bush hog was attatched and dragging on the ground. I was having trouble getting enough traction with my truck to keep it moving. I thought my dad had it in high gear but he had it in 2nd gear. It had just rained so I was having trouble with the traction with my truck and having trouble with the tractor tires slipping instead of turning the engine. Of course it didnt help either that the tractor was in 2nd gear instead of 4rth. So yeas I guess I was pulling it too fast. After trying rpeatedly to start the tractor pulling it faster and faster eventually the engine turned over enough to get the hydraulics working enough to get the bushhog off the ground. So we then decided to pull it out on to the road where we usually pulled it to the top of the hill detatched it and coasted it down a hill starting it in 4rth gear. But, by this time The damage was done and it behaved like it weas in neutral when I let off of the clutch going down the hill. What an unpleasant suprise. I am not sure what kind of transmission or clutch it has. I am considering ordering a repair or service manual for it. I guess that would be a good start in trying to figure out what might be wrong. But, first I have asked my dad to check and make sure he dosen't all ready have a manual on it somewhere. Any advice on how to check the clutch plate etc or do I need to wait until I can locate a manual?

A manual is always the best place to start. Shoot you could have done a lot of thing to it. May have even broke an axle, or ring gear or pinion. I have even seen the center of a clutch disc ripped out before. Your starting problem is probably a weak coil and or bad point and condensor. Maybe even a cap or rotor.

Does it by chance have a sherman tranny in front of the other tranny. If so it maybe in netrul. It should hurt a tranny to pull it unless you pull it to fast or you pop the clutch. You may have broken some thing in the rear end or even ripped the clutch face off the disc. Also why would you be pulling it any how??
