I have an IH 2514 with a DT235 diesel engine. It is a 1974, all original. RUNS GREAT. Good power. This fall, it started to blow a little more black smoke than normal. The big thing is that when the govenor kicks in, it blows wet from the exhaust. It is slippery black gunk, but not raw fuel. It smells carbony, not like fuel..but is thin like fuel. It covers the muffler with this black gunk!! Power seems to be the same. Still runs great, too. What could the problem be? Oil ring blown? head? I don't think it is just head gasket...it isn't water...donesn't skip. Any idea?? Please help! thanks.

None of the above. Sounds like you aren't working it hard enough.

Check your air intake system, air filter.A diesel will blow more black smoke than normal if its not getting enough air.If a diesel is not getting enough fuel the opposite happens, you'll get white smoke.

Redjd,

Are you sure about the white smoke being not enough fuel? Typically that is fuel that has been heated, but not burned. It's just like running a bug fogger.

Blue smoke is burnt engine oil.
Black smoke is too much fuel, too little air --> but it IS being burned.
White smoke is too much fuel --> but it IS NOT being burned. You see this when you start a diesel on a cold day. Lots of white smoke and it smells of fuel.

Like old said, it could be the diesel engine slobbering because it hasn"t been worked hard and the cylinder walls kind of glaze over. I have seen it a lot on diesels seldom used under load.

Whens the last time you really worked it hard?? If you haven't worked it hard in awhile that is the problem. Diesel need to be worked hard or the will start spitting junk out like that
