Likely, the most common unit is made by Pertronix. The sell from the $50 range to $125.00, depending upon the reseller's markup. They work well, giving a more consistant spark and dwell than points, especially in a distributor with some bushing and shaft wear. You can use a "hotter" coil for a better spark. HP gains are probably not GREAT over a fresh set of properly set breaker points, but the need for adjustment and replacement is eliminated. Typically, an engine with a Pertronix unit will start and idle a bit better than before the conversion. The units can be "fried" by connecting or charging the battery backwards, and, if the ignition switch is left on without the tractor running, the electronic unit and the coil will get hot, and possibly be damaged. This is more likely with a low primary resistance "hot" coil. Pertronix II units are available for some applications. These are "smarter" and shut down the primary current if the engine is not turning over. Here's a link to the Pertronix applications guide, in .pdf format. Th AG section starts on page 28.
