Has anyone out there done any electroplating such as chrome or zinc? Would a battery charger work for power?

I did not answer the batt. charger part of the question;yes but you make a saltwater resistor.I have the litterature if you would like a copy. Its fun to try but for good chrome you need a plater.

Ive tried it.You really need less than 4 volts and 1 amp per square inch. You must control temp,Ph,solution strength, etc. You need to pickle, then Nickle, then chrome, three baths, and you must have buffing equipment. If you want to do it for fun go ahead.About a year after I did some special bolts they rusted and I replaced them with ones sent to a commercial plater.I did not do a copper coat which is real show chromes first layer.[Mine was not from Caswell]You also need a gallon of sulphuric acid but you can use the extra to strip chrome with your battery charger.Makes nasty fumes in the shop also.

I have used the kit offered by Eastwood, which runs on two D batteries. It is good only for small things like bolts, etc. I am interested in rigging up a bigger set up. The only problem seems to be that sulphuric acid is used in most plating techniques.

Anybody can do it in small scale.... Lots of kits available.. battery charger will work .. See link for materials.. If you can mix your own stuff in bulk, it can be cheaper but for small scale, start here or some place similar... J2

Farmer, Ive never researched the subject but a crude uneducated guess tells me it might take one "heck of a battery charger" to do the job. If you go over to the John Deere Board and post a Question something like "FIT Electrolysis Question" I bet Ol Frank aka FIT may know, tell him Ol John T said he should anyway lol
