i have a new holland rake 56 that runs when it is supposed to be out of gear i can only get it to stop running if i undu the shaft that run to the wheel. How do i fix this and what causes it

even though mine would disengage by using the lever and cable I never towed it on the road without unhooking the driveshaft, inorder to save wear and tear on the gearbox

Shifting fork might be broke off or dowel pin holding it on shaft inside of gear box. If it is like a John Deere 850 series.

Yea..like Kelly said..the cable goes to the gearbox..it can be adjusted very easily. Cable might have stretched and needs slack taken out.

There should be a cable that has a disengage lever for the gear box if I remember right.....The cable goes down across the back side, Might be a place to start.
