Can not get the pistons with new rings into the cylinder on a 39 'B' that I am restoring. Block was bored out and sleeved, so that we could keep original pistons. There is a 'lip' about 1 and three quarter inches from front of cylinder. My ring compressor lets me get the piston started, but when the oil ring hits that 'lip' I can not find anything to help compress ring to get piston further into the cylinder. Do I have to take block off, so that I can get pistons/rods in from the rear of the block? Or is there some tool that will compress so that it will work from front?

I am assuming you are talking about a John Deere. I rebuilt one and the pistons go in from the top end of the block. Don't quite know what lip you are talking about. The sleeves should extend the full length of the cylinder and be absolutely smooth. If the lip is inside of the cylinder wall they must have screwed up somewhere. If that is the case do not put the pistons in until it is fixed right otherwise you will break the rings.

I agree with CalJim it sounds like the block wasn't bored right. I would take the block and pistons back to the machine shop and have them measure again. The only other problem that I can think of is that maby one of the rings is poping out of the compressor when you trying to install them.

Brian,
Curious about the "lip" on the cylinder,is that
the top of the sleeve or does the sleeve come up
to the top of the cylinder? I would talk to the
machine shop that installed the sleeves to see
what's going on.
