I recently acquired a used DB 990, took it to a tractor mechanic to have the transmission fluid and filter changed as well as the oil. When he went to pick the tractor up, he mentioned that it wouldn’t move depite it being in gear. After he got it to the shop, it did move no problem. He told me he thought the problem was with some kind of rod on the clutch (don’t remember what) but he pointed to the mechanisms just under the clutch pedal and said that he had greased it etc and it was working better but wouldn’t engage at times, thought some use would work it out as the tractor had been setting up for a while.

Just got it out to the field today. It pulled fine for about 70 yards then would stop. I thought perhaps the plow was too deep and picked it up – still stuck. Then moved a little, little further, them sounded fully engaged and pulled forward. Plow went down , pulled slowly for 20 yards – repeated the same problem. Stopped – changed gears from 1-2 slowly started in second then you could feel it get all powers to the tractor and it moved along fine.

Then repeat process. I finally had some luck with pushing the clutch in go to reverse – push clutch in go to first. Repeatedly – each time going a little further forward and back. It was the same feeling and operation of getting yourself out of mud with your car – rocking back and forth. Then after doing this lots of times it would kick in either at reverse or forward and seem fine – but would always stop after a short period.

Any ideas? All fluid levels are good. PTO spins like a champ, although I have not had a load on it.

I’m trying to decide on whether to sink more $$ in her or just come to grips that the repairs may cost more than I should spend.

Please let me know what thi problem sounds like to you – bad clutch – bad tranny – or maybe……just some type of clutch adjustment. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff McAdams
