have a friend who has an E JD 1 1/2 hp engine. The engine has had all new gaskets. We put new rings in, had the valves ground, and rebuilt the igniter, however the engine still will not run. I should also mention that there is good compression, and fuel. The only thing I can think of that it could be is that there is insufficient spark. We have tried everything we can think of with the igniter and cannot get the engine to fire. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I once had a no-start JD-E and finally discovered the intake valve was stuck.

Take a good look at the end cap bushing. If it is worn it will let the armature drag inside the mag case. It will not build enough energy to fire the ignitor correctly. You can use a volt meter and spin the mag by hand, it does not require a fast spin, and see if it is putting out any volts. You might see 0.5 to 2.0 volts as you spin it slow. Find the max voltage and time the mag at that point to the gears in the engine. Work and starts easier and runs better than using the left pin or right pin setting. You will get a better spark at the ignitor.

If you checked everything Turk mentioned and if the engine runs with the coil hookup then possibly the magneto needs to be recharged. If someone had the magnets off the magneto they lose a lot of their charge (magnetism).

Hi Dave, you can test it on a battery and coil by grounding the neg to the engine and run the pos through the primary side of an auto coil to the ignitor. Remove and ground the magneto wire. Is your ignitor working right? The terminal on the ignitor should be grounded as the trip loads the springs and show open when it snaps with the wire removed. Timing marks on the flywheel line up with the pushrod for fire and exhaust timing? Do the timing marks on the crank, cam, and mag gears line up at the same time? There is a pair of brushes under the front cover of the mag that need to be in decent condition and clean, along with the collector rings. I use brushes from dead F20 mags for replacements. They can be a little cantankerous that first time. Good luck, I will try to help if I can. Bill

And be careful with the mag, it is really easy to break the housing and and plates. I heli-coil the two mounting holes whether it needs them or not, cause if you have it off a few times it is going to need them.
