I have a lister D engine and when i idle it very slowly (Probably far too slowly)it makes a metallic knocking sound.

I have rebuilt and checked over the engine and can`t think what this can be. Could it be a pre ignition problem caused by running it too slowly?

The knocking disappears when I increase engine speed and i am running it on unleaded petrol, but it only makes this sound when it is warm.

running some engines VERY slow puts high stress on the rod and crank. if engine is to speed very little stress is needed to keep flywheel at speed. very slow running means a lot of power has to be transmitted to accelerate the flywheel each time the piston fires. may have something to do with knock.

I don't have one of these, but the answer the old guys say is a loose wrist pin bearing.Rod and crank bearing generaly knock louder as the speed increases.

I've heard of weird knocks caused by a loose gib in one of the flywheels. Easy to check and to fix.
