g'day all i have a wisc vf4d and i have cyl 4&2 not giving any compression, new pistons , valves, seats, cyl bores. 1&3 are fine for compression and are firing in sequence. what i have noticed is when i put my finger on the spark plug hole i have a large amount of vacuum (suction) and no compression. during rebuild i made sure that the timming marks on cam gear and crank gear were aligned as`per book(however a few beers during rebuild may have clouded my memory)can any one help, Is there anyway of checking cam to crank align without stripping the eng down again. it is in a bobcat and a '"horses arse" to remove AGAIN'
I am at a loss, everything is new or reconditioned to specs.
My shout for a beer if anyone can help

cheers from down under

I don't think that Bobcat used the VF4D; only the VH4D. Senlim is correct; if you changed the cam or crankshaft and put wrong one in it, you will have the symptoms you describe. The VF4D had an uneven-firing sequence, the VH4D was even-firing. Or maybe you got the marks off.

Something is definitely wrong!

Not knowing what parts you have replaced I must ask if you replaced the camshaft? The VH4D and VF4D cams are physically interchangeable but will not work in the wrong engine due to the differences in the firing angles.

Know the Bobcat reasonably well. Note some of them had Stelite exhaust valves and Stelite inlet valves due to the high operating temps in the machine.

If you can get a head off in the frame you can check valve timing ie valve rock on TDC on all cylinders. If you can remove the tappet covers and use a feeler rod down the plug hole you can achieve the same result.

Or you may be able to do it with a small (dentists) mirror through the spark plug hole. Remember on hand cranking with the wring camshaft or timing set up it may be sucking on an exhaust valve open!!!!! !!!!! !!

Work hard – drink less;-) mines a Melbourne bitter.

Where are you? I am in Cootamundra NSW.
