HELP! We have an engine and transmission and need help in figuring out what kind it is. The only identification helpers are the following: serial # on the steel engine id tag is 18v883ael048863, Mowog, 1800cc, Lucas, and a Napa Gold Oil filter #1068. We have had two different people look at it and one says it is a Ford 8N, and another says it is a Massey Ferguson!

18v883 model engine no corresponds to appx late 70s MG 4cyl auto engine. Most"tractor"engines such as Ford 8N or Fergeson would be easily IDed by the"stock"clutch/trans housing being designed as an integral part of the tractors chassis, unlike the small case used for automotive trannys. The exception would be a tractor engine set up for stationary use.

If it's got MOWOG (MOrris WOlseley Garages)on it anywhere then it's BMC for certain. 1800cc would make it one of the "B" series petrol engines. AS someone else said a pic or two would be handy.
Cheers, JV.

That filter is a spin-on oil filter, and an 8N would NOT have a spin-on oil filter (unless someone has made up a changeover) Lucas electricals would also point away from an 8N, at least if you're in the US.

How about a picture... almost certainly SOMEONE will recognize it!
