Runs good for a while then just cuts out. Sparkplugs have spark. I put a long muffler on it and the neighbor said it should be a short one. would this cause it to overheat the intakeand cause gas problems? It is on an old New holland Baler model 66. Does anyone know anything about these old Engines?

It sounds to me like when the engine heats up you lose valve clearance which causes compression loss and the engine shuts down. It will start right up when it cools.Check valve clearance when cold to the manual.

ABSOLUTELY, the muffler can cause what you describe. The engine will overheat and cause vapor lock of the fuel line. It happened to me many years ago. Didn"t have the right muffler for a Wisconsin V4 (on an Owatonna Windrower), put one on from a Farmall tractor. That thing would run for about 15 minutes then start missing, no power and die out. You could see bubbles in the fuel filter. Kept it up until we tried removing the muffler again. Cured the symptoms so we got the right one from the Wisconsin dealer.

Yes i did take the muffler off and I also replaced the fuel pump and filter as the dealer suggested It did run for about 20 minutes more but still shut off like some one shut it off

Is this a 2 cylinder? Maybe a TH or THD. Look at the condenser or the coil in the mag getting hot and cutting out.

Thanks for the help!
yes it is a 2 cylinder a TFD. I checked the condenser and I have a light on the sparkplug. I do have spark when it cuts out. I know the top gasket in the diaphram of the fuel pump was a little dryed out.So now I am putting on a new fuel pump and filter. The dealer thought that it might not be able to keep up with the engine.
