Went to a farm estate auction yesterday. No red tractors, but I did buy a hit miss engine. Tag marked: "International Harvester 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 HP, serial no. LAA 6446". Missing a few parts I think, rusted out fuel tank, broken mag cap. Rest seems to be okay. Engine turns over about half way then stops. I have not gone any further, did not want to screw it up. Where can I find out any info on these? Parts, manuals, etc. ? I will take some pictures of it, and try to figure out how to post them here. Thanks.

LAA engines are throttle governed engines, not hit & miss.

The prefix LAA in my book can not correspond with a 4 digit serial#. All the LAA's were followed by a 5 digit, meaning if it IS LAA and has 5 digits after, then it would be a '36, '37, or '38. Based on this assumption, it would have a WICO magneto, manual oiled rocker arms(through the use of a GITS type oil cup screwed into the rocker arm shaft, and MOST LIKELY entire engine was painted RED. Was there a suffix letter/letters after the srial #? Any other questions, feel free to email me or you can post here and I'll try to pop in a little more often. I lurk the Farmall board most every day, but sometimes forget to stop in here.

Hey there. Yeah, I did not see the last didgit. It ends in a one. Serial Number is LAA64461. Thanks for the info. I will probally sell it, as my Farmall Tractor hobby keeps me as busy as I can be for now. It has an IH marked mag on it, with just a hint of red paint. Needs some parts for it also. I just bought it to keep it out of the hands of the scrap metal guys who were buying everything like this at the sale, just to scrap out. Thanks.

Go to hitnmiss.com International LA's are easy to get parts for.

Good choice on waiting to turn it over. Could be stuck valves, rust in cylinder, etc.

Anyway, hitnmiss will have parts, a manual etc. Good luck.

Yeah, I know enough to take it easy. I bought it to save it from the scrap metal guys who were buying up all the old junk, and non running engines, etc. I will try to get it going, or sell it to a collector who may want it.
