I just purchased a John Deere E engine and I'm wondering what is the slowest RPM and the max RPM for these engines. Also I'm having alot of oil coming out of the crankshaft on both sides of the flywheels. Is this common for this to happen or are there felt seals that need to be replaced. There seems to be some blow by on the crank case breather, I'm wondering if it sould be rerung or is this also common for this engine. When the engine is running I have to have it half choke or it will stall out. I'm hoping that someone out there can help me out with my questions and furture g

Hi Randall. Yeah you can clean up your bearing halves, and depending on the year you won't have a breather. It's a pretty common thing. RPM's: I think it's 550 or 650. It says right on the gov cover. I get the 1 1/2 and 3 hp mixed up, I can never remember which is which. Doug

There are small slots or chanels in the main bearing halves. Those get pluged & may need cleaned out. They help direct oil back to the crankcase. I cleaned mine up & no more oil leak. Make sure the crakcase breather is working also.

You can slow down oil loss by removing crankcase cover and check for loose main crankshaft bearings. If loose remove two bolts on each one andcheck for shims between bearing halves.By removing one or more but not getting bearings too tight should help oil loss. It is not a slow running engine but by changeing the governor spring to a weaker coil spring it will run slower. Do this while cover is off and oil is drained. Remove two cotter keys and slide out shaft and spring. Install in reverse order. Good luck

Thats all normal for that engine. There are no seals. Less blowby will help, but not stop the leaking.

you have to realise that on a one cylinder engine even with out blow by there is just as much air moving in back of the piston as there is in front
