I've got a Wisconsin VE4 mounted on a wood spliter. This fall I tried to start it and had no spark. I took the magneto off, took it apart, cleaned everything, regaped the points to .015. When I put it all back together everything ran fine. Started it and ran it several times. Last weekend I split a load of wood, shut it off, and now no spark again. I took the cap off and could see the points open and close. How do I test the condenser and coil? Could it be something else? Thanks for any help you could give me.

Blue Earth sounds like south east Minnesota. A farming community where the NAPA guy probably have a demand for these parts. I live in Burnsville MN. A suburb of the Twin Cities and there is not a big demand for engines that old. Almost all have distributors, except for some one like myself who has the older engines. Would you be willing to pass on the phone number of the Blue Earth NAPA?

Sorry I didn't get back to you right away JOB. The phone number for Napa in Blue Earth is 507-526-2154. I go to the VA in the Twin Cities about once a month. If you need something maybe would could work something out.

www.magnetoparts.com has parts and caps. If your cap gets to drawing moisture you can seal it with clear top coat paint.

Thanks for the info Kent. I found that site before. Every time I try to download his catalog I get to page 9 or 10 and my computer locks up. I don't know if it is his site or my computer.

I would guess the condenser is bad. Hopefully you have a Wico mag on your engine. I have a Fairbanks Morse on a VP4 and have had nothing but trouble with the Mag. I too have a VE4 on a wood splitter and have been splitting wood with it since 1979. Every once in a while I will have to take the cap off the Wico mag and shine up the points, re gap then and I am good to go. If I still have no spark I will put in a condenser, that usually gets me back running. The last condenser I bought was at NAPA, Echlin WI 200.

Thanks for the info JOB. Yes, it is a Fairbanks Morse. Says Type FM XV4B7, SN: 3052651 on the data plate. I called Napa a couple of weeks ago and asked if they could get parts for it. They told me no. Might be that the parts guy didn't want to look it up, I don't know.

I think the condenser for the Fairbanks Morse is an Echlin FM 200. I got so tired of the Fairbanks Morse Mag I gave up on the engine. There used to be a lot of VE4 engines in Minnesota. If you can't get that mag fixed I would look around and try to get a Wico mag. 39 years ago I had the Wisconsin distributor in Minnesota fix my Fairbanks Morse mag. Today they send you somewhere else. The number one cause of Magneto failure is improperly gapped spark plugs.
There is usually a couple of guys on this site who might be able to help also. Good luck

Thanks again JOB. I was able to get a condenser from the Napa store in Blue Earth. Put it in and it started right up. They can get points, condenser, and coils for the mag I have. The parts guy said he would have to do a little more looking to find the caps, rotor and gaskets for it if I need them.
