This is probably an easy one ... I would like to know how to time the magneto for an IHC LA. There is a circle mark on the magneto gear but I could not find a corresponding one on the mag side of the engine drive gear. Also, What should the gaps for the points and plug be set to? Thanks!

Have you got your engine timed yet? I have a pretty good method to do it, but it takes a paragraph or two to explain it. Shoot me an email if you still need help, and I'll try to help you out.

Thanks Kevin:

It sounds as though you just set it at TDC when the low speed lever trips. That is about where it was set originally but I wasn't sure if someone had monkeyed with it. I can not get it started and thought that there might be a timing issue. I wanted to check if there were alignment marks to verify the timing. I have a 1918 IHC M that has timing marks for this purpose. One on the flywheel and one on the block.

The spark is very weak and that might be the reason for hard starting. I think that the magnet needs to be recharged since it feels like it has a weak field.

Regards,

Wade

The magnets on the mags on those engines do not typically require recharging like some of the older horseshoe type mags. Clean, adjusted points(.013), new condenser(available at any IH dealer..just ask for a mag kit for an H or M Farmall as the H1 is the same internally as the H4 used on the Letter series Farmalls.) Usually this is all that is needed to get a hot, blue spark from one of these mags. Hopefully you have an IH 'H1' mag and not the Wico mag they used on the earlier LA engines. Plug gap is also a factor in one of these not starting well. I believe that .017-.020 is the range you want to aim for. I'd have to dig out my book to be sure. Kevin

Mag timing is EASY for ANY engine with a mag with an impulse, and especially easy for this one-cylinder engine.

Lacking specific instructions or timing marks, set the mag timing so the impulse trips AT, or slightly after TDC on the compression stroke.

Any earlier, it will "kick back", damaging the person cranking it, any later than just after TDC is too late.

Here's a link to a service manual for the mag... you'll have to cut and paste:

Link

It is the "H1" magneto.

The breaker point gap is .013", I BELIEVE the plug gap would be .025".

Hope this helps!
