My mag has gone bad on my model M. Can a person hook a low tension coil and 6 volt battery to the igniter and not use the magneto to get the engine to run. Mike

Hey mike. Sure you can run a battery. But to make things easier you can have someone recharege the magnet. It takes about 2-3 seconds and is fairly cheap. Doug

The way you described the mag on your engine it should have an ignitor on it as well. If so what you want to do is to unhook the wire leading from the mag. That way you won't hurt the mag with the battery and coil setup. A 6 volt battery will work fine but also use a coil in the system as well. I just use a tractor or old car coil. This should work fine. There are on most engines that I have delt with, a small machine screw on the ignitor base to be used as a ground. Then hook up the hot wire to the main clip on the ignitor. With the coil in between the battery and ignitor. Hope this helps. Initially it sounds like the magnet is just weak on your mag. If it is a horseshoe style magnet it shouldn't be a big problem to get it recharged.

You sure can. Just be sure to disconnect the mag. I'd suggest that you go to www.enginads.com, and post your question on the SMOKSTAK column. Some of the experts there can give you better advice than I can.

Some of the old ignitor engines were actually started on coil and battery. After they got up to speed, the ignition was switched over to magneto. The reason is that when hand cranking the engine, the magneto would not spin fast enough to fire the igniter. The faster a magneto spins, the hotter the spark.

You can Connect a 6/12Volt Battery Directly to the Igniter and Gnd(The Engine Frame) Will Work Great!

You can hook directly, but you'll be putting alot of current through the ignitor points. As pointed out previously, better to put the primary coil (+ and - terminals) in series to limit the current. The points AND the battery will last a lot longer.
