JOB - Wisconsin VE4 Timing

I've check the archives on timing a VE4 Wisconsin engine and I'm still a little confused. There are 4 marks on the fan shroud. One is at about the 9:00 o'clock position. One is at about 10:00 o'clock. One is at the noon position and one is at about the 2:00 o'clock position. When timing this engine do I line the DC mark on the flywheel with the mark at the 10:00 o'clock position? Or, do I use the noon position? Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

Hi bob George has pretty much put you on the right track. When the magneto is fitted to the engine the X marked tooth should be visible in the lower half of the inspection hole.
When the magneto is properly timed, the impulse coupling will snap when the DC -X marked vane lines up with the centerline of the number 1 and 3 cylinder, on the flywheel shroud. This can be checked by turning the engine over slowly by hand. The impulse coupling will snap every 90 degrees of flywheel rotation.
The spark advance is 27 degrees. To check with a timing light, the running spark advance is indicated by a mark on the flywheel shroud, 27 degrees before the vertical centerline of the number one and three cylinder. You should whiten the end of the X marked vane when you do this. The 27 degree mark on the flywheel shroud is the mark before the centerline mark of number one and three cylinder.

Thanks JOB. What should the plugs be gapped at on this engine? I checked the gap and they are set at .020 now.

Spark plugs are gaped to thirty thousandths (.030) Points are gaped to .015, you already knew that I am sure. Incorrectly gaped spark plugs are the number one cause of magneto failure.

Should be a center punch mark between the 10 o-clock mark and the 9 o-clock mark. Now, on the flywheel where the DC mark is. You take that fin and line the leading edge of it up with the center punch mark. First, make sure you are coming up on top dead center (compresson stroke not exhaust stroke) with the number 1 cylinder. Thats for an engine speed Distributor. For a half-speed distributor, its the same, only you line the leading edge of the fin up with the 10 o-clock mark. When running, with a timing light, you time to the 9 o-clock mark.

Thanks George. This engine has a magneto, so I'm assuming I use the 10:00 o'clock mark?

With the mag, the book says you time it to the 12 o-clock line. on the mag drive gear one tooth should be marked with an X. Where the mag mounts to the engine, there is a screw/plug, remove that plug. When you mount the mag, you shiuld be able to see the tooth with the X on it.
