I have a witte 2hp . I am not sure how the carb. is set up . Is this a single fuel ? what are the conections to the fuel tank . How do you adjust it ? Is there a check ball ?what is the starting proceedure ?How is the fuel level maintained ?

This engine most likly has a single fuel carb, all though some have a separate fuel cell cast into the carb for starting the engine on gas and then swiching to kero. This type of carb will have two needle valves instead of one. Your engine will run fine on gas alone. There should be a check valve in the fuel line that is where the line starts in the bottom of the fuel tank or pipe fittings comming out of the tank. It it is very important that it is clean and working properly. The fuel is drawn up in to the carb by the vacume/low air presure that is created in the venturi of the carb. The check valve holds the fuel there and lets the fuel in on the intake stroke. Make sure you retard the spark when you try to start it or it could kick. Whittes have a timing mark on the fly wheel that is lined up with the top of the water tank and is where the spark should occur durring normal running. With the spark retarded the mark will be past the top of the tank. Most of the time a good place to set the needle valve is about one turn. You will need to choke the engine with your hand to get fuel into the carb. Most of the time the fuel will run out of the intake. Depending on which set up you have, Trottle Governor, or hit and miss on the earlier models will also determine the type of carb on you unit. The trottle Govenor type has a series of holes around the intake with a spring loaded washer behind it. It acts as sort of a choke. The hit and miss types just have a square casting as the intake if I remember right. Also, does it have a Wico EK mag or a plug and coil ignition? I think you may be able to get an owners book from Lee Peterson. He advertizes in the Gas engine magazine freqently. Got more questions? Ask away. Dave!

Bill D is right, The early models were headless. In other words, there are no bolts, or studs and nuts, holding a head on. The cylinder is cast flat across the front. The valves are off to the side of the block. If it has a bolted on head and you remove it, you must be careful reinstalling it, as many Whitts have a "hollow head which provides no support completely though the head." If you tighten it too much you could crack it. Dave!
