I just bought a LB for a conversation peice on ebay. My question is does it use gas or kerosine?
what purpose was this little motor used for?
It is a 1948 model serial# LBA139953.
My plans are to clean the points up, clean the fuel tank, and change the oil, and cross my fingers.
Also since i"ve never seen one of these engines, how do I start it?
Turn fuel on? pump some little circle deal below the carb? crank the flywheel?
What are the valve lashes?
Thanks for looking
Adam

The valve cover should be red but if you pre fer black thets ok too.The oil line has an adjustment on the end over the oil tray.A little more just makes a mess. Might check to be sure it's not pluged.

The lb is a great little engine. Ihave two one is mounted on a home built show - parade tractor ,the other on a pump jack also for shows. The rectangler trough you mentioned is filled with oil through a tube out of the crankcase,it should have a felt in it to hold the oil.Check the gas tank ,many of them are rusted out and need to be reparied or replaced. You can get most any parts by contacting this company at this web site. www.hitnmiss.com There many more sites on the web.

Thank you Dandy Dave. Tonight will be the begining to an adiction I'm sure.
That rectangle thing on top of the rocker arms, should that tray be full of oil?
Does the motor oil the rocker arms? Do I have to keep them oiled?
Another post kinda filled me in on other questions I had. I'm usually on the JD forum, this site is awsome.

While you have the fuel tank off be sure to check the butter fly in the carb intake. This is operated by the govenor and sticks commonly. To start it you open the fuel about a turn and push down on the circle thing. It is the choke. I am not sure on the valves but I think it is the same as a Farmall "A". Most of the time I close them until there isn't any play and then open them about a third of a turn and lock them there. Gives you about 14 -18 thousands. Make sure the impulse in the mag is workng or it could kick. You can here it click as you turn the motor over. There are timing marks on the fly wheel and on the block. It should click about the time the marks line up. Good luck, Dave!

We have put put put!!!!!
Cleaned out gas tank, changed oil, checked spark(zap!!), cleaned out little carb(like you said),
It took a few cranks,(maybe 10-15)and than it fired and ran like I thought it would.
Thank you all for your help.
Should that felt be dripping oil on the rocker arms often?
I let it run for a half hour or so, and I didn't see any oil drip from the tray/felt, so I oiled it a little (I got nervous).
No problems though.
I 'm going to give it a face lift this weekend, and is the cover for the rocker arms saposed to be black or red?

Most of these old stationary engines need the valves oiled periodically. Don't be afraid to oil the wick and also the valve stems from time to time. They don't require a lot of oil, just enough to keep them wet. If you use something heavy like 90wt Gear oil it will stick better and last longer. This is what a lot of fellows use on their Brass era automobiles with exposed valves. Dave!
