Hello all, where can I find info & history on this engine. One of the guys on the yahoo group told me mine was a '26 model (ser.No. 32561). I traded for it last week. It's been in a dry shed for 25 years, but had set outside for quite a while before that. the outside is rusty, but the inside is pretty clean. I've got it soaking now to see if I can free it up (the crank is free, & I've freed up the rocker arm, but everything else is stuck).

What are some good tips for getting the flywheels off the crank shaft? Is there a site for guys with this type engine?
thanks, Mike SA

Mike
Try web site "http://www.oldengine.org/members/hammink/web/.It's a good site.I'm on my 2nd teardown of the "M"'s.Lots of fun. No advise on getting the keys out.Don't try to pull flywheel over gib key.I tried that on the gov side and cracked the gov sleeve.Try to knock the flywheel back on some, then see if you can get the key out.I used 3 railroad spikes behind the flywheel and attached a 3 prong gear puller.Make sure you clean up the crank shaft to get rid of burrs.LOT'S OF LUCK

Frank, another question I jsut thought of. The reprint of the owners manual I got shows the cylinder sleeve as removable. In real life, can you get these out of the block, or are they normally rusted in (and getting the oil stand pipe out has to be painful).
thanks,
Mike Sa

Frank,
Thanks for the info. Did you have to use any heat on getting your keys or flywheels off? I thought about making a heat shield for the crank bearing & putting some hot wrench to the hub area of the flywheel. I tried a tapered punch on the gib key & it didn't want to budge so far.

Where do you get your parts for these engines? I ordered a catalog from one of the stationary engine suppliers, but it's not shown up.

If I were you I would leave the flyweels alone. You could break them trying to get them off! Be very carefull with the govenor assembly as this is another weak spot. There is a lot of history in 150 Years of International Harvestor by C.H. Wendel. Not sure abot web sights? Good Luck, Dave!

Dave, one of the flywheels is really in the way as far as access to the cam & ignition parts. As they are also rusty, they really need to come off in order to get them fixed up. The governor on the opposite side also needs some attention.

If the piston comes free as I hope it will (the cylinder looked pretty good when I put a light down the plug hole), I could leave the crank where it is.

I think I'll machine a 2 piece plate to go behind the flywheels that a puller can pull on (I have a well equiped machine shop).

I received a reprint of the owners manual today. Now if that catalog from star bolts will just show up, I can start planning some parts (if I get it apart).

I was hoping to find another Model M owner to exchange some ideas with.

If you must pull the flywheels, do it, but do it carefully. The plate sounds like a good idea. One problem that sometimes happens when pulling the flywheels is that they don't always go back tight. Frank#1 has some good advice on the keys. Good luck. Get them out or you will break the governor sleeve. Dave!
