It's an igniter fired engine. Thanks for your help.

All you need is a 6 volt battery and a low tension induction coil and three wires. The first wire runs from the insulated igniter post to the coil, The second wire runs from the coil to the + side of the battery and the third wire runs from the - side of the battery to the ground. On igniter fired engines with a mag most of the time the points are normally closed and are set to open when the engine is to fire. This is so the mag will have a place to drain off it's "stored energy" and not overheat and melt the insulation from windings. When the engine is to be run off of a battery and coil the points are normally set to be open so it does not run the battery down. You should take the igniter out of the engine, Clean it and bench test it. Be sure that everything is moving freely and nothing is sticking. It is not uncommon for the contacts to be black and sooted up with carbon. If the contacts are not touching when you pull it out then it is set to be "normally open" To change it from an Closed to an open position. All you have to do is move the spring from one post to the other. Good luck. Dave!

Best to get a mag, but if you want to run it off of a battery and coil that is possible. First I need to know if it is an igniter fired engine or a spark plug fired engine? An Igniter fired engine only needs a low tension coil and the points set to be open until just before the engine is to fire. A plug fired system will take some back yard enginenuity to make a contact that will ground against the cam at the right time. Dave!

It can be run off coil and Battery. Not exactly sure how to hook it up though.

I have never seen a model e jd run on battery ig but probley can be done .Would be best to find a good mag, although it would be expensive.Try this site for parts. www.hitnmiss.com .They should have anything you need. there are many other old engine sites on the web. Try a search for antique stationary engines. good luck.
