Made 1980, January ( 80 01 in the code number). What type of wiring? Normally all these engines have for wiring is a wire to ground out the mag. to kill the engine.

Aloha Kent, Today I removed the shroud and there are 2 red wires coming out from behind the flywheel and it goes to a black plastic looking cap. There are also two wires coming out from the black plastic cap, one going to ground and the other to?? There is also another small black wire coming out from behind the flywheel that is just hanging. This small engine has both electric start (12V) and also a pull start.I don't see a rectifer to charge the batt. so it must be missing some parts? I would like to remove the flywheel but not sure how to reset the timing. Do I have to mark the flywheel? TIA

Mahalo,

The small black wire is the kill wire. You connect this wire to engine ground to stop the engine. WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT CONNECT 12 VOLTS TO THIS WIRE. The magneto will be destroyed The other wire I think is connected to the plus side of the battery to charge the battery. You should get the engine running and see if you have DC on the wire coming from the blcak box which is most likely the rectifiers. It might also be a regulator but I douth it. If you measure +DC from this wire to engine ground (-DC) you will read a higher voltage than 12 volt because you will be reading the unloaded voltage which is always higher. If you have DC you should connect this wire THROUGH A FUSE, 5 amp should be big enough, to the plus side of a battery. WHY you use a fuse is not to protect the battery from over charging, it is to protect the diodes and the alternator stator if someone inadvertently installs the battery backwards. I have work a lot on small engine but have never seen a 5 HP B&S engine with electric start. I know they are out there I have just never seen one.

Aloha Kent, Thanks for the reply and I haven't taken a really good look at it yet. I just saw some wires hanging and will trace them out and repost. TIA
