Do you use antifreeze in your water hoppers or do you use water and then drain for winter? Will it hurt to leave antifreeze in the hopper....I would not think so...BUT...??

I have mine full of a 50/50 antifreeze mix. I don"t run them hard or long so they don"t get real hot - basically as soon as I see some steam I shut them down and let them cool off.

If you"re going to drain the water... maybe add 1/2 gallon of RV antifreeze just in case there"s a little bit left in there.

Or use compressed air to try and blow dry everything out.

I run water all summer, drain 'em, and then add a small amount of anti-freeze. You must be careful with engines with a wet head because it is often impossible to get all the water out of the head due to it's design, some of them do not have passages for the coolant on the bottom because of the placement of the ports etc. It is also possible to have rust, scale or dirt built up in the bottom of the hopper or head that will hold some water. Hopper cooled engines rely in part on evaporation for cooling, and anti-freeze doesn't evaporate much.
