A friend just gave me a Wisconsin, horizontal crank, V-4 cyl. engine. It has an original gas tank looks like a factory mount gas tank on the right side facing the flywheel. I can't find a tag anywhere on the block that would identify the model and S/N. Could it be hidden by the gas tank? I don't want to disturb it since it has very sour gas inside.

Thanks fellas for providing the web sites on wisconsin engines. They have been helpful. Using the Identify area, I think that I have at least partially identified my engine as a VE4D.
There are no holes in the shroud that would have previously held a tag. There appears to have been an air duct that fit over the shroud at some point in it's live. The carb is a Zenith with the suffix being indestinguishable, but the steel tag on top says L 48 and 1034 + what looks like a C, after scraping with a dental tool. The magneto is a Wico X with XH1343 and S/N 491809. I have stripped all the sheet metal except the fan shroud. It seems to be attached with bolts behind the flywheel. Don't think I'll go there!
No other numbers have surfaced even after pressure washing it. It has a flat belt pulley on the driven end of the crank. Looking through the plug hole, I can see that the valve area has not condensed moisture of any volume. I'll use a MM oil, kerosene and diesel concoction for an engine soak to see if I can free up the pistons and go from there. I don't have much need for the engine and will probably try to sell it intact or part it out to help folks who need the parts. I live near Dallas, Tx.

Thanks a lot for the information you fellas have furnished. It looks like I have a VF4-- model. I have gathered more information today as follows:
1) it has a Wico X impulse magneto. Model 1343.
2) the carburetor has Zenith mod. W cast into the side. I can't tell what numbers are on the round disc on top. Rust has claimed them. It will take some more work to gather them. 3) there are no numbers on the flywheel end of the crankshaft.
4) there is no data plate nor any holes where one may have been attached on the air shroud. 5) it is mounted on what looks like a factory metal skid. A rounded corner gas tank is also attached to the skid.

Check out the online parts catalogs at Wisconsin factory site to help get more clues. Numbers were on a tag on top side of shroud that could be gone now. A few older ones had a brass tag on shroud and you may see holes where it was once riveted on.

The gas tank should not be hiding the name plate.

The name plate is usually on the flywheel shroud. sometimes the serial number is stamped on the end of the crankshaft.
