Got a DC 250 with Wisconsin VF4D engine that a cylinder cracked on so it's overhaul or replace it. Have another VF4D engine but it's actually a military surplus MVF4D engine with clutch on it. Wondering if anyone has had one apart before and knows if the engines will interchange easy or is the crankshaft different enough it won't work? Found a manual for it on Lincoln Electric site but it still just doesn't really show how the armature couples on the engine shaft. Anyone know? Thanks.

If the cylinder jug is cracked, why not just swap that out between teh 2 engines? May need to re-ring, etc.

The wisconsin with the clutch has a different crank than the one without the clutch. You might be able to couple it to the welder after the clutch.

Heard more back from Wisconsin Motors on crank specs and stub shaft is shorter and tad smaller diameter on engine with clutch than one on welder. It may fit with with the clutch as that shaft is same diameter and long enough but then engine will sit back and hood will be too short. It may get grafted with another hood and become a long hood odd Lincoln. Amazing what the Wisconsin folks still had in their records for engines made in 1955 and 1961.

If the MVF4D clutch is a standard Rockford over center clutch the crank shaft will be a shorter than standard stub.

I think the Lincoln welder armature is bolted to tight fitting coupling plate on the crankshaft and this also may be a shorter than standard crankshaft stub though not sure how short compared to the clutch unit.

The welder should be relatively easy to dismantle. make a note of all wiring connections ready for re assembly. A digital camera could be useful.

Good luck

Wisconsin, wisconsinmotors.com just answered me back saying from engine tag spec #s the cranks and rods were different and not interchangeable but didn't say why on shaft end. Yes there is a hub on engine bolted to fan and armature so maybe can just fab another hub to make it work. Military engine was cheap and already rebuilt ready to go. Thanks guys.
