I have an F162 on a 1953 Onan generator. Tired of playing with the FM magneto and want to switch to a distributor system. Will a Pertronix D41-05A work for this engine? Any other type of distributor that will work? Prestolite was used on many of these but I can not find the correct part number.

I have a Continental F162 in my Fairbanks-Morse generator. It has a Prestolite 1BT 4501A distributor.

If your engine has the hole for a distributor or gear teeth on shaft to drive one. Look in there before you buy the distributor. It may have a tong drive needed? A right angle drive Delco will bolt in place of the mag and work with the correct Pertronix also. Stay away from those old POS Wico and FM distributors as they were never good to begin with and most parts for those are now obsolete hard to find. More mag parts are still available than for those distributors. Someone that rebuilds old Continental forklift or welder engines may have what you what need or can tell you for sure what fits. FM J & X mag parts are still available and pretty common too.

The engine currently has an FM ZV 4C69 magneto which is located on the top of the engine. Not sure if this is the original magneto or not but the spark is very weak and starting the engine is very hard and is getting harder everytime I try. The mag looks almost new so it may have been changed before I bought the unit. Once started, the engine runs fine. This engine only has 400 hours on it so I think the engine is in good shape, excluding a few oil leaks here and there.

Yes, according to the Pertronix catalog that distributor should work. Their catalog gives rotation and measurements of the distributor base also. The parts list for FM-ZV4C69 shows the tong drive fitting on drive shaft not a gear. In those the base bushings, shaft, and impulse can wear or a weak coil can cause poor firing. The impulse assembly and spring inside has to be in good shape to spin the mag over faster for good starting spark. Since you have the top mount mag instead of a side mount flange mag I'd go with the Pertronix dist too.

Thanks for the information. I sent a note to Pertronix and they confirmed that this is the correct distributor. They did indicate some changes are required to get this to work and they are mailing me the instructions.

I am pretty sure that the mag on the engine is not original. It is a CW (clockwise) mag but it appears to be turning CCW when you look at the rotor from the top. It has worked fine for a few years but lately getting this thing to start has been VERY difficult.

That's good. The mag is most like original as the Fairbanks Morse mag books shows it fit that engine and FM also made some of the same mags in radio shielded versions for Onan military generators with Continentals. Most all parts are still available for that mag if you want to fix it later for a spare email and I can send you a parts list on it.

Your best bet is to get a wico or delco distributor that is made to replace the old mags. Lots of companys used to sell them and are seen on lots of old tractors.
