I recently bought Briggs Stratton engine. The only identification on the engine is a tag down low on the side of the shroud with lubrication info and at the bottom of the tag is this
Model, 233401 Type, 0110-01 Code, 7205241. It is half again bigger than my model 14 which is a 6 H.P. so I figure it's a 8 or 10 H.P. Any help appreciated. --Walt--

Briggs ID numbers: The first one or two numbers indicate the approximate CUBIC INCH DISPLACEMENT.

The first number after the displacement indicates the BASIC DESIGN SERIES, relating to cylinder construction, ignition, or other major differences.

The second number after displacement indicates POSITION OF CRANKSHAFT, TYPE OF CARBURETOR, and sometimes GOVERNOR.

The third digit after the displacement indicates TYPE OF BEARING, REDUCTION GEARS, AUXILIARY PTO, or PRESSURE LUBRICATION.

The last number after displacement indicates the TYPE STARTER or CHARGING system.

The TYPE number identifies the engines mechanical parts, color of paint, decals, Governed Speed and Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Code Number is the manufacturing date such as the number 90012201 would mean 90= year, 01=month, 22=day, and 01= assembly line and manufacturing plant.

Info taken from a Briggs repair manual.

The model number tells a mechanic many things about the engine; its displacement, whether it is a horizontal or vertical shaft, the type of starter, and other things. The type number tells things about the application for the engine such as the muffler type, fuel tank, and sometimes even the type of equipment the engine was installed on. The code is sort of a serial number. It also tells when the engine was built. For most of the engines in service today, the first two numbers of the code number are the last two digits of the year of manufacture. The table below gives information about engine model numbers. The diagrams below show model, type, and code number locations for most Briggs engines.

Briggs & Stratton Model Numbering System

A: Cubic Inch Displacement B: Basic Design Series C: Crankshaft, Carburetor, Governor D: PTO Bearing, Reduction Gear, Auxiliary Drive, Lubrication E: Type of Starter

"14" = 14 CID

"23" = 23 CID

IIRC, 23XXXX series would be 9 HP.
