Hello,

I have an International Harvester La stationary engine and having trouble getting to start for the first time after restoration. (It didn't run before either) I have gotten it to putt once when I put gas in the cylinder and cranked for a while but that's all she did. I can't get it to do anything now what could cause it? I have gas, spark and compression. Where do I want the D.C. mark when the mag trips? Right on, after, or just before the mark on the side plate? Any help even the obvious would help. Just in case I over looked something.

-Nick

Make sure that the magneto is properly timed. Just fired my LB a week ago for the first time and it was one tooth off. All it did was pop once in a while. Index the flywheel so that the DC mark is 3 3/16" counterclockwise from the mark on the cover plate. Index the mag gear by placing the marked tooth (the one with the tooth number on it) 25 deg. counterclockwise from the notch on the mounting flage. The mag should slip right in if it"s right. If it still won"t start, check your air/fuel mixture.

I just re-did my 3-5 LB. I had spark, put gas in the cylinder, one pop, nothing more.

I took out the plug, increased the gap and it ran like a charm.

On every one of mine after a rebuild, I belt it to another engine to start it. After it starts the first time, it will start easy, every time. My mag snaps just a tick after TDC.

What is the right way to put the shaft for the butterfly in? I don't remember how I had it but, I'll just pull it off to make sure.

It"s been awhile since I had my apart, when you put the head back on did you get the shaft lined up right that works the butterfly on the intake side, if in the wrong postion you will crank all day. Brent

I have 2 of them.man told me at a show one day his Dad always said that was the only engine he eves saw there could be nothing wrong with and it would not start. I believe him we had cranked on 2 of them all day. We finally got them started and they have been running every since. Plug does not to be wet for the engine to run.I set mine to run @ TDC. Check valve in fuel line working is a must. Make sure there is no water in the gas tank and that the inlet screen on the fuel pickup is clean. It should have a bright blue spark and the mag should have a very strong snap. Good luck.

I just went out to mess with it some more today. I adjusted the mag to spark just after top dead center. I put gas in the cylinder and she putted once. I added gas again and she only putted once more. Then I found out that I am leaking compression around the spark plug. So I will have to fix that first, then maybe, just maybe she'll putt more than once at a time.

The plug will not get wet if I crank for a while with the choke plate down. But if I put some gas in the carb and then choke it, it gets wet. But it still won't fire. Right now I think I have the mag set too late. The plug I am using is a Chanpion W-14. But before that I was using a Autolite 3076 but it stopped sparking when it had to. Is a champion W-14 or an autolite 3076 a solid copper core plug? If not where can I get one? I have replaced the fuel line with an new one with a new check valve. But I don't know if it work the way it should every time. And I do have the needle open 1/2 to 1 turn. I tried opening it more but nothing happens and the pug won't get wet.

Thanks,
Nick

When you say you have gas - does the spark plug get wet when you choke it and crank a while?

I have found on mine that the check valve in the tank needs to work correctly before they will run.

I usually get my magnetos to click just a smidge AFTER top dead center - makes a kick-back less likely.

Do you have an automotive type carbon core spark plug wire? You need to have a solid copper core wire...

Are you holding the choke plate down? Gas needle open 1/2 to 1 full turn?

Just some thoughts to start with.
