Hello Everypne,

I have this engine on a JD 224 baler. It has a mag and I have pulled the cap, I see a spark at the points but not every time. I was wondering if that would be the condenser?

I am trying to get this running and would appreciate any step by step instructions, what to do first second ect.

I am thinking spark first then fuel, then compression I have heard the valves stick open on these engines also so any advice on how to free those up would be helpfull as well.

Thanks JD Gimpl

HD

I just went through my 4cyl Wisconsin, I sent the magneto to Standard Magneto in Chicago, they had it back in a week and only charged me $48 to tune it up with new points and condenser.

After installing that I had to free two exhaust valves, I took the head off and sprayed WB blaster ? under the valve and let it soak for a day. I then sprayed it again, this time turning it over by hand while tapping lightly on the valve with a small ball peen. After I got them to go down, then back up agian by turning by hand, I sprayed under the valves again letting them soak.
The next day I turned the motor over by the starter, while tapping on the head of the valve with the ball peen very lightly, you can actually get in time with the valve opening and closing. It took about an hour of tapping and turning it over with the starter and they were free.

I again sprayed some blaster under the valve, and let them sit closed for two days while I waited for a head gasket from NAPA. I just finished putting it back together about an hour ago, and it fired right up.

Good luck

Jim

1. Valves on these engines tend to stick if the
engines sit for a long time.
2. It will have either a Fairbanks-Morse, or Wico
magneto. Points and condenser are available fron
this-"yesterdays tractors" website. Go to the
electrical parts page and "search" for "magneto".
Other parts, like caps, rotors, and coils are
available.

Make sure the pivot pin is oiled and points move freely or not worn out. Clean and file points to get some spark first and if worn replace them and the condenser. Check connections at mag terminal if has such going to a grounding stop switch too for shorts. You didn't say what brand mag but points on most will set at .015" and gap plugs at .025 or .030". Under parts section there are down l o a d a b l e manuals available from Wisconsin Motors and under accessories section for Wisconsin you'll find manuals for the magnetos, carburetors, generator, starter, etc.... If what you need isn't on there just email them and they can help you with a manual.

Sounds like dirty/oily/oxidized points.
