My son just bought a JD Model E 1 1/2 HP stationary engine and we can't get it going. If anyone is willing to talk him through some things to look for, I am leaving my email open or if you would pass along a phone number that he could call. He is mechanical inclined so is no dummy but is just out of ideas on this one. Thanks.

Been too long and have to get my book out. Ask over on Smokstak.com or search their sponsor ads for Hitmiss.com or Starboltenginesupply.com as they will have operators booklets for it with the timing instructions. Memory has it you hold one of the rivets in on the front mag plate into a idention on internal mag plate when piston is up on compression and one of the flywheel marks lines up with the valve rod. Same thing you roll it around where another mark lines up as one valve just starting to open and the mark lines up with valve push rod and the ignitor just trips as the mark lines up. You loosen the clamp on rod and slide the trip piece back and forth till get lined up and timed right. That's not all the right way so ask someone else or find a manual but once you have those instructions it's not hard to do.

If you have an igniter then the mag needs to be timed so the greatest charge is made when it fires.

Thanks for the help guys, especially Bill. He tried the coil and battery like you suggested and it started right up. It wouldn't stay running when he tried switching back to the mag though. He since has had the magnet re-magnetized and has a good spark but it still will not run on the mag. He thinks he might be off a little on the timing yet.
