It ran for about ten minutes or so yesterday. Not enough to seat the rings, but enough to know that the fuel pump doesn't work good and that the oiler runs WAY too fast. Today we tried it again. Something was wrong, out of balance. Took off. Went ape. Way too fast, shaken and walkin across the floor. Couldn't get to the plug wire, so covered the carb to kill it. Leventy-seven million RPMs a minute, then it happened.
KA-POW! Govenor blew all over heck, iron bits flyin by our heads...lots of play in the main bearings now...nobody told me this would be dangerous.

1919 McCormick/IH 1 1/2 "M", now you got to tell me how you knew that! Ran a wire to the throttle plate and ran her agin today after tightening the bearings(had plenty of shim). Might have to wait till May to get a govenor at Flywheeler's swap meet, gonna buy another fuel pump too. I thought she was about ready for paint, HA! Or, don't count your decals before they hatch....

Have gotten up close and personal with that hand crank myself....couldn't keep up when she fired. The handhole is just 4 bolts on the plate.

Why not post the story . It could be a help to others and perhaps prevent injury . What do you think ?

Yeah, Dangerous, Hard Work, and Fun all at the same time. Hope nobody got hurt. I bet that was exciting. I got a Fairbanks governor control from a fellow. He took the governor out and jammed the butterfly so it runs slow. Well, the butterfly came loose one day while running. It was bouncing around on its cart, trying to take off, lucky it didn't fly apart like yours. I think it is unbalanced too. If you open the throttle very much, she goes to dancing and it aint no slow dance. My fire is a little weak(hard to crank) so I haven't touched it lately. Good Luck
Nathan

Rather a frightening experience and a costly one to boot I'm sure . sorry to hear of your misfortune. Was the govenor working the first go around ? I had seen a net site showing damage when the flywheels blow , was very impressed and for sure will double check my govenor before starting my Mogul .

It seemed to be working, though not adjusted down. It seems the linkage to the carb turned ALL the way over (slop in the linkage, enlarged butterfly hole, whatever it's called) and then it was WFO and the wobble got worse, the gov tried to slow down, but with it flipped over it worked IN REVERSE! Had a LITTLE play in the bearings before that, but nothing to indicate that it would try to walk away! The gov was replaced because it was broke, maybe the same thing happened to the guy who sold it to us. Thank God it WASN'T the flywheel, bad enogh as it is. Now have to go over everything when thought the pump and mag were only problems...Will be careful, though!

Sorry Nathan , I never book marked the site , It showed dammage from several different incidents. One blew a brick wall out , another destroyed the insides of a shop , looked like a bomb had gone off. If I find it again I will post it here on the bullitian board as a safety hint :>)
