I need some help with my Fairbanks morse Z 1922 as i'm missing a couple of parts such as mag etc. but my question is, how do you tell if you need a trip arm 2 3/4 in. trip arm or 51/4 in. trip arm for the mag? Another quick guestion ,How do you get valves out of the head without destroying the head as the cylinder set with the oil pipe broken out of the water hopper for 15+ years outside in the rain so the valves have basically become one with head. Thanks in advance. Chris

I have bent valves doing what Merlin posted to do. My personal method to remove stuck valves is to clean the exposed part of the valve stem with sandpaper or Krocus cloth. Apply a healthy amount of penetrating oil(Kroil is the best I've found but any will do). and now the final step if you don't have a press get access to one and set the head up in it and press the valves out of the head. you may need to use a pin punch of the right size to finish pushing the valves out. This is the most bloodless way I know to remove stuck valves (you don't know what a bad day is until you bend a valve stem over trying to drive it out with a hammer) Hope this will help, Hammer

Can't help too much with your first questions, but I have removed rusted valves from heads. First, it is best to use some sort soft hammer and a brass drift. If you have time, soak the head in water for a month before you even start. Water helps to soften the rust. It really works wonders. Heat also works well. Sometimes you really don't need much to heat to make a big difference. Be sure to heat the whole head uniformly. Be conservative with the heat. Also, shine up the parts of the valve stem you can get to before starting. Soak valve with your choice of penetrating oil. Start tapping on the valve. Don't hammer directly on the valve head, use the brass drift. Once valve moves one direction, tap it back the other direction, and so on.I hope this helps, but maybe other people have better ideas.
