I have a John Deere 1 1/2 horse engine. I'm in the process of getting it running and have been unable to. I think the problem may be with the igniter. Does anyone have information on the type of igniter which are common to engines of this type. One of the main questions that I have is if the igniter should be open during the intake and compression strokes. At rest, the igniter I have is closed. From my reading I know that make-and-break igniters should be open, and then are closed briefly then opened which causes the spark to occur.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Todd

Todd, The John Deere Ignitor does not work like other ignitors. The points have to be closed prior to the spark, because of the Mag. The Mag works like a generator in a way. If you remove the Mag to test it you will not get an impulse trip or a Spark. You have to spin the gear and drag the wire across the base for the voltage to build up to spark. As the lead is lifted while the Mag is spinning you get a Spark. Another thing to look at. Time the Mag to its strongest point. Take a Voltmeter and hook one lead to the Tower and the other to ground. Slowly spin the Mag to find its stongest point. Mark that tooth, for that will be the best timming spot on the Mag.Then install the Mag at that strongest point to the Crank with the spark mark parallel to the exhaust rod or right at parallel. The ignitor has to trip at that point. The mag does not care where you time it to the Gears. It runs its best if you spark at its stongest point. Do not worry about the timing pin on the end cap. I learnt that it is not always the strongest spot in the Mag. Set the Exhaust Valve to the Exh. open mark to the Exh. rod, at that point the exhaust rocker will be just opening the Valve. ( not just touching but just starting to open the valve ). Got you lost. Hope not. E mail me if you need some more info.

Todd,
Check the Staionary Engine Link site, in the resources area. I believe I saw info on mags, ignitors and etc. listed there.
