Have a 50's vintage Onan 20 kw generator w/ a Continental F226 engine that was fueled by natural gas. Appreciate information on what will be needed to convert to gasoline and where to get conversion parts. Thanks

I suspect it won't be difficult to convert. I have a Fairbanks Morse 20 kW generator with a Continental F226 engine I plan to repair. It came with both natural gas and gasoline carburetors. One was stacked over the other. As far as I know, there were no changes required to operate either way. The last time this engine was running, in 1986, you had to start it on gasoline, then you could switch it to natural gas. The compression ratio of the F226 is close to 6 to 1, not very high. You could probably bolt on a modern one barrel carburetor to convert yours to gasoline. You may need to come up with an adapter plate and modify the linkage to the governor. There should be a cover plate on the side of the block where a fuel pump can be mounted. I'm curious, what kind of carburetor is on your engine now? Both of the carburetors on mine are made by Ensign, a company I have not been able to find much info on. They are updraft carburetors. If you eliminate your natural gas carburetor and it is similar to mine, please let me know. I might be interested in it for spare parts. I have a large list of bookmarks on engines, carburetors, and other info I came across while researching my generator. I also have phone numbers for Continental and some of their suppliers. E-mail me if you would like more info.
Good luck.

I have been searching to find out some info on how to time a Continental Red Seal F226 engine for my husband. I ran across your post on Converting from natural gas to gasoline. I was wondering if you might have any idea how to time this engine? He has a sawmill and is unable to use the engine because the timing is off or there is something else wrong with it, and it runs on gasoline. Thanks, BEF
