I recently acquired a Briggs and Stratton model 14 engine. After cleaning the points, I got it to run. It is set up to run stationary equipment, but it has a tag that leads me to believe it was used on a garden tractor at one point. It runs great at a low to medium throttle setting, but it just cuts out when I open the throttle up to fast. It also seems to run best when the main mixture needle is set lean. It runs worse as it warms up until I can only keep it running at idle. I need to know what you guys think about what the problem may be. I have the flywheel off because I think it may have something to do with the coil, but I have never seen an electrical system like this before. Are there ignition parts available to order for this engine? I don’t want to put that much money into this thing, but I think it’s a neat motor and am thinking of rebuilding it. Any suggestions? The type number is 202038. Serial number 267302. I’m pretty sure it’s a 1955 model year.
Thank you
Erik

I am working on a B&S model 14. Did a search and found your post. Looking for spark plug info. What does it take. Mine came without one but engine if free. Carb is probably gummed up. Cleaning up and starting slow. Model 14, type 202041.
Thanks

Erik,
It may be the electrical circuit breaks down as it gets warm. Check with your local B&S dealer, I was able to get a new head gasket for a 14 I am restoring just last month. You may want to check the screen in the gas sediment bowl also. I have had them plug-up on engines that have set for a long time, and cause the same type of problem you are having.
