Anybody out there have any info on a small unit manufactured by Delco? I have one that is about a foot square, generator is built directly onto the engine crankshaft. Unit is dark red color, with a stamped steel base. It appears to be 4 cycle, and about 2HP.

Hi Franz, I have the twin to Your Delco. The one I have is missing the fuel tank, it has a plastic one from an unknown engine. I've been to a lot of shows around the midwest and haven't seen annother. It runs very well, & puts out 13/14 VDC. I think it was used to charge batteries. It is possible it was used in a gas station. Does Yours have the original tank &

Hi Franz,
What is it you would like to know about them? I own 3 Delco Light Plants. 2 of them run and a third is still stuck. I have done a fair amount of research on them. They came in many styles and voltages. Are there any identifying marks on them? Perhaps a serial number.

Jan,
I too have a Delco like yours. Mine came from a house on Mersea Island, Essex, England. The owner of the house was a much travelled man and he brought the Delco back to England in 1919. With it he brought light bulbs made by Edison Light Company, Delco griders and a Delco well pump, all 32 volt. The plant and equipment was all in use until the 1940's when mains electrics came to the Island then the whole lot was put into storage. I met the son of the family in 1960 and he invited me to look at the engine, it was in a little shed in the garden and I had seen nothing like it before. I tried to buy it but the family would not sell. Then in 1986, one friday evening I got a phone call to say that the land around the house had been sold for building and the engine was going to be taken away for scrap on the monday morning. I borrowed a pick up truck and a friend and I drove the 100 miles to the island and collected the engine and all the bits.

The engine took about 4 hours to get going and it runs like a clock! It had been correctly stored with storage oil and fuel and the delay in starting was due to the fact that we had to work out how it went. I now have all the instructions.

We used to show it but have had little time as my collection has expanded to five tractors and various other machines. I have never heard of another engine here in England and most old engine collectors shake their heads in amazement at such a "modern" type of engine of that date.
regards
Brian
