Just got a Fairmont 2 flywheel 2cycle engine. It has a cooling tank;not a radiator, and has a buzz coil for ignition. It's complete and looks like it should run. What can anyone with experiance with these railroad car engines tell me about starting and operating this thing?
How does the engine operate in either direction?

Hooray for the 2 flywheel 2 cycle Fairmont. I have a 6 hp.! It does run in either direction, but you have to move the timing lever to acommodate the direction in which you start it. These engines are fun to work with, but they can be trying at times. I had to make a few parts for mine. To petcock, I say if you do junk yours, please give me the chance to buy it.

Just picked up a fairmont engine the other day and have figured that I will never get around to restoring it. If you are interested let me know. It is missing carburator and ignition. The piston is stuck but I think that the right person could make it go again or use it for parts.

I have seen a few Fairmonts running at some shows. They run fine and with a dual stack, one sounded like a Harley-Davidson. I have a copy of the manual for these engines so if you need one I can send a copy to you.

I have one of these engines #91459 and need any information that I can get. I would like to pay you copy and mailing costs for a copy of your manual or if they are available somewhere where could I get a hold of one?

Please E-Mail me. Thanks Ray Harry

I have an 8HP Fairmont which runs fine in either direction. I have not been able to change from one direction to the other while the engine is running. I have also not been able to find a manual on these engines which may shed light on how to do this. If are still able to send a manual copy please let me know via e-mail, and I will be glad to reimburse you for your troubles. Thanks, Joe

I had a Fairmont eng blow up while attempting to start a fresh restoration w/tractor. 20+ yrs. ago and still shudder every time I see one at shows. They run fast and erratic w/o load. Don't think I've seen one run slow and don't have the guts to try. Have good tension on timing lever as it can change in the blink of an eye. Air leaks into the crankcase are a prob.-especially main brgs.

It sounds like I'd better junk it and get a Maytag instead!

I don't have alot of experience with the Fairmont engine but because it is a 2 cycle engine it will run in either direction, the direction you want it to run is determined on which way, either clockwise or counter clockwise, you turn the flywheel to start it.
