How to get started

I've been looking at stationary engines for years at shows and have been fascinated. Have seen a few for sale, but most appear to be scraps of parts in a box and while I'm pretty handy I wouldn't know where to start re-doing them.

So I guess my question(s) is/are: how to go about getting started buying a stationary engine for play--good sources, brands to look for (perhaps parts availability better with some?), how much to expect to pay, where to buy one.

any info is appreciated!
thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
It's not too hard to get started in stationary engines, but it is easy to get ripped off. Prices on engines vary widely. Show prices are always high. See if you can't find a local club. Engine shows are a good place to join. They are usually the sponsor of them. Club members can help you find a good first engine, find parts, and offer repair/restoration advice. Good luck,
Joe R
