Hello,

I removed the carb from my Sears 6hp mower to clean it. It was stalling, and I thought it might be varnished up. Cleaning it with Gumout did the trick; it runs fine now. However, upon reinstalling it, the governor ceased to work. The engine runs fine, but the governor does not function properly. I believe I have the linkage hooked up correctly, but the governor does not throttle down the engine at a no-load condition, and does not throttle it up when under load, as it should. In other words, it overrevs at no-load, and doesn't throttle up when under load. I understand the basic design of the Techumseh governor to be spring-loaded fingers on the camshaft which fly out at higher rpms, pushing against the lever which extends through the engine block attached to the throttle linkage, thus lessening the throttle opening (and rpm's) when the motor is not under load. My quandry is this: I don't understand what I could have done by simply removing the carb. Regardless, what do I need to do to get the governor mechanism to work again?

With the engine stopped, carburetor throttle in the wide open position, the govenor link should also push the throttle into the wide open position. You can adjust this with the little screw on the engine govenor arm coming out of the block.

Thanks for your response, fzbcheve. I tried what you said, but the problem seems to be lack of movement of this arm. Shouldn't the arm coming out of the block move when the throttle position changes? It does move with the throttle itself, but I've walked beside it when entering a stand of tall grass, and expected it to move (to give the motor more throttle) when the rpm's decreased. It does nothing, as if the internal mechanism isn't working. Remember that I said that all I did was remove and reinstall the carb. Unless I twisted the arm somehow, I'm having a problem seeing how I caused it to not work. Any other ideas?
