My great-aunt is giving me a McCormick-Deereing 1 1/2 HP engine. I have never owned or operated any hit-and-miss or other engine and haveno idea where to begin on getting it started or restored. Are manuals available? Gasoline or Kerosine? What do I check before I get it running?

Thank you, Jordan.

Your M is a throttle governed engine.
One of the 1st things you want to do is drain out any old gas, remove and clean the gas tank.
The fuel pump on these have check balls in them, I'd remove the fuel pump also, make sure the check balls aren't stuck. These engines were designed to be started on kerosene, then when warmed up switched over to gasoline. I run mine on gasoline all the time. I have a serial number list for these, if you get the number, I can tell what year it is. Reprints of the manuals and parts are available from Hit&Miss Enterprises in Ohio.

Looks like you typed that backward. The engine is STARTED on GASOLINE, and then SWITCHED to KEROSENE after it has warmed up.

if the carb has two needle valves it starts on gas then once warmed up can be ran on kerosene. if it has one needle valve it is gas only.you should be able to get a manual or parts from hit&miss or starbolt. these are popular engines so parts shouldn't be a problum Bobrr
