Question on timing FM ZD

I've been working on a Fairbanks Morse ZD engine. If I set the timing according to the manual I cannot get the engine to run -- it seems to want to kick back. To get it to run I need to retard the timing. I'm doing this by moving the flywheel beyond the "correct" timing mark. My question is: What does this type of timing indicate? Is there a problem in the mag? Poor compression? ???

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Todd

Is the flywheel hub worn? I've seen a similar problem on one engine. The hub on the flywheel was worn so that the flywheel had turned on the crankshaft. It was no longer possible to properly time the engine by the timing mark. It probably wasn't safe to be operating the engine, either.

I have a F/M engine/generator combination which I believe dates back to 1942 as it is mounted on a two wheel government trailer with government tires on it. How do I find out the model number and obtain a manual on it?
