I am brand new to these old stationary engines, but have found one not too far away I'm trying to talk the old boy out of. Went to look at it the other day, and the guy said "Yep, it's a hit and miss, and here's the throttle control on it." I thought if they have a throttle, they are throttle governed, otherwise they are hit and miss? How can a guy tell if it's one or the other? Is there any good books or websites out here for the rank amatuers like me? I've seen Harry's site, and feel like I need to get a little more knowledge under my belt before I could even ask a good question out there...those guys really know their stuff but I'm embarassed to ask this easy stuff out there.

If the governor is connected thru linkage to a throttle plate or valve on the mixer it is throttle governed. Hit/miss will have a means of governing whereby compression is relieved or spark
is shut off until the speed drops to the desired level. There are several ways of accomplishing this, that's what makes this hobby so fascinating!
Have fun- we are all still learning!!! Bill

Hey Novice, don't be afraid to ask any questions on Harry's engine page.I'm far from being real knowledgeable on old engines, but I'm over there all the time.Even answer a few questions now and then. The guys over there are pretty decent.Just remember,we all used your nickname at one time.Good luck and have a good time.Pollack Pete
