Hi, I am fixing to take possession of a nice little Maytag motor. Single cylinder. I understand that the original mix was 20 to 1. I was wondering if anyone had tried using some of the later 2 cycle oils that work at 32 or 50 to 1 ratio. Seems that the 20 to 1 mix would smoke some. And don't the later 2 cycle oils have better lubrication properties than the older oils?
Thanks

Mike ~ Maytag has always recommended 16:1 using 20wt non detergent oil...30wt you could use also...lawnmower or chainsaw oil is a fine grade oil and has a tendency to weep out and make a mess on the older engines...high detergent oils like 10-40 will gum it up royally! I have 30 years experience in running these engines...and yes they do smoke!

Thanks for the info. I notice there is no choke, just a lever that says open and close. What is the proper way to start it? What rpm does it run at? I'm off in search of some 20wt non-detergent oil.

The lever is for the fuel mixture. Standing straight up, between open and close is the CHOKE position. All the way over to the open position is the normal running position.
