Question about oil-gas mix

I'm a little confused about the mix ratio for some 2 cycle stuff I got. For example I was told that the Maytag motor takes a 16 to 1 mix. So do I put in 8 ounces of oil to 128 ounces of gas, which would make a gallon plus a 1/2 pint, or do I put in the oil, then add gas to the one gallon line on the container like it says in my chain saw instruction book? Seems to me that would be more like a 15 to 1 mix. I don't know how critical it is one way or the other. The guy I bought the motor from said he always used a 20 to 1 mix, yet everyone says that it should be 16 to 1. Thanks for helping the confused.

My father and I have restored and ran Maytags and other 2 cycle engines for 20 yrs. now and we always run them at 34 or 40 to 1 oil mix.

The only difference I have seen is we foul out less plugs and the engines do not smoke as much.

If you are going to run your Maytags at shows I would suggest that you 40 to 1, leads to happier fellow exhibitors.

Mike ~ Keep it simple...you will be fine between 16 and 20 ratio...not that critical. Have a good day!

Thanks. You seem to know a lot about these Maytag engines. So could I ask a couple or three questions about my model 92 single? 1, what does that lever that says open/close do? 2. What should the gap be for the plug, points? 3. What rpm should it run at? It does not appear to have a throttle, so how would you adjust it? Thanks for any info you can share.

Mike ~ Lever controls your needle(open and close)...go to www.oldengine.org/docs...find maytag service manual(pdf)and there will be plenty of helpful pictures...point gap 1/32(thickness of dime)...plug gap .024...running about 1000rpms. Also go to www.maytagclub.com for some interesting history and information...HAVE FUN!

Thanks for the info. I picked up a new plug for it last night and will mix up some fuel and give it another shot. I noticed that it doesn't seem to have a choke. But I noticed that it cranks easier if I hold my thumb over the carb intake when I push down on the kickstart. Mine does not have the breather/filter at the carb so it might be in it. Thanks again.
