I am restoring a 1934 model 92 maytag # 31 engine.
The carburetor fuel feeder tube appears to have something missing. The feeder tube does not have a ball and seat that is described in the service manual. Mine has a small hole and a flat disc in the end. Can someone tell me what parts this unit should have?

the fuel tube with the disk was the replacement for the tube with the ball in it. If the tube is gummy from old gas, soak it with the disk in some carb cleaner for several hours. The disk needs to fit right on the seat so that it makes a good seal. It acts like a check valve. Fuel goes up, but not back down.

Thank you Mike for the advice. Started the engine today and it started on the third kick. Some times after starting the engine has banging noise. Is the timing off? Everything is in good shape as far as piston, rods and bearings.

Have you opened up the engine and looked for any foreign objects that might have been left behind when someone put her back together. Happened to me, found a very beat up brass screw in two pieces in the gas tank. The piston rod cap was peened up a little, but removed the pieces and put back together and the noise went away. Strange, but true!

Don't know what the banging noise could be unless the connecting rod is loose on the crank. It is a type of hit and miss engine so it does not fire every time. I'm still new to these myself and am learning as I go along. You might want to try adjusting the governor nut and see if that helps. Also, have you checked the rpms to see what speed it is running. Should be 1000rpm or so. If you are like me and have no intention of doing anything with it other than just have it run at a show, you can slow it down a lot more so that you can see the hit and miss effect better. I'm also going to try running mine at a 32 to 1 mix to help reduce the smoke and slobber. Good luck.
