Maytag question

Hi, reading my manual, it says I can check the coil using a "hot shot" battery. What is the voltage of a hotshot battery? When I worked at gas station as a kid, we had a 12 volt battery on a cart to jump start cars with and the boss called it a hot shot. But seems like 12 volts would be too much for this little coil. Thanks

A "hot shot" battery would be about the same as a large 6 volt lantern battery. I've checked a Maytag coil using one, with good results. I wouldn't be scared to use a 12 volt lantern battery. A car battery puts out 12 volts, but also a lot more amps. I'd stick with lantern batteries.

Thanks, I just bought a 6 volt lantern battery to have as a backup, so I'll use it to check the coil. Any tricks to it, other than what the manual says?

Just follow the manual, and you should be okay. No tricks involved. I used this same method to check a coil on an engine using a similar ignition. This method works real well. Good Luck!
